The clash between the mighty Zulu and the British Empires on the 22nd January 1879 was heard around the world. On this fateful day the British suffered their worst defeat in  colonial history at the hands of Zulu’s at a small hill called Isandlwana. Just hours later British pride was restored when a small detachment of men defended their outpost against Zulu forces.

Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana Overnight Tour Itinerary

Day 1

You’ll be collected by your specialist battlefields guide from you accommodation in the Durban or surroundings area and make your way onto the first stop, KwaDukuza. It’s here that King Shaka kaSezangakhona situated his military kraal and where he was assassinated in 1828. Here you’ll learn more about the Zulu people, their way of fighting and their military tactics.

After this stop you’ll continue on route, passing Fort Pearson, the Gingindlovu and Nyezane Battlefields as well as Eshowe where the Coastal Column under Col Pearson was besieged. Finally we’ll get to out lunch time venue where you’ll get to enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking Isandlwana.

Lunch is followed by a tour of the museum and then a tour of the battlefield itself where your guide will describe the events that happened on the 22nd Jan 1879 and answer any questions you may have. After this you’ll head onto the Rorkes Drift Hotel for checkin and dinner.

Day 2

After a hearty breakfast you’ll start the day by visiting Fugitives Drift. It’s here that the first VC was won by Pvt Wassell and where Lt’s Meville and Coghill were awarded posthumous VC’s.

Next up you’ll visit Rorkes Drift and have the opportunity to walk the field of battle and discover for yourself the heroism displayed on both the Zulu and British sides. You’ll also have a spot of lunch here and then travel back to Durban.
