Whether you’re visiting for the famous hippo and crocodile boat cruise, using it as a base to explore the nearby Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, or just soaking in the serene atmosphere
A Brief History of St Lucia
St Lucia is a small coastal town located on the eastern shores of South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal. It lies at the heart of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the country.

Originally inhabited by Zulu communities, the area was named “St Lucia” by Portuguese sailors on Christmas Day in 1575 (“Santa Lucia”). Over the centuries, the region has grown into a unique eco-tourism destination known for its wetlands, estuaries, and close proximity to both ocean and savannah.
Ultimate Guide to St Lucia: Top Things to Do in St Lucia
1. Hippo and Crocodile Estuary Boat Cruises
The town’s biggest attraction. You can take a 2-hour boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary to see a plethora of hippos, crocodiles, and abundant bird life. It’s a relaxing yet thrilling experience – and a must-do for any visit to Durban.
2. iSimangaliso Wetland Park Safari
Explore the park’s incredible mix of ecosystems – from wetlands and savannah to coastal dunes. The park is home to elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards, antelope, and an impressive bird population.
There are two sections, Western Shores and Eastern Shores, each offering it’s own particular ecosystem that makes visiting both reserves a must do.
3. Night Safari Drives
St Lucia is one of the few places in South Africa where you can enjoy a guided night safari. You could see nocturnal animals like bush babies, genets, chameleons, and possibly even leopard.
4. Cape Vidal Beach and Snorkeling
A short drive through iSimangaliso leads to Cape Vidal, a remote beach ideal for swimming, fishing, snorkeling, or just relaxing on pristine sand. You’ll often spot wildlife en route.
5. Whale Watching (June – November)
Seasonal tours are available to see humpback whales along the Indian Ocean coastline. These trips leave from St Lucia and are led by experienced marine guides.
6. Turtle Tours (Nov – Feb)
During nesting season, guided night drives take visitors to see Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles laying eggs along remote beaches.
7. Birdwatching & Walking Trails
St Lucia is a birder’s paradise with over 500 bird species, including fish eagles, kingfishers, and flamingos. Walking trails around the estuary are safe and well-marked.
8. Horseriding Safari Trail
iSimangaliso is the perfect game reserve to enjoy the amazing experience of getting up close and personal to African wildlife on horseback.

Where to Stay in St Lucia
There are a lot of options when it comes to accommodation choices, it all depends whether you are looking for 5 star or are happy in a tent – St Lucia is popular because of all the options.
If you’re keen an camping, then the Sugarloaf site in the town are a perfect option. Situated near the estuary mouth, you are close to the beach 10 minutes gentle stroll and close to the to the town itself (maybe a 25 min walk). Do not walk at night though!
There are loads of B&B’s in the area but it would be so hard for me to select or recommend one – they are all pretty damn good.
There are lots of self-catering options as well, my favourites been “St Lucia Palms” and “Flamingo Apartments”. If you do the self-catering option, you can purchase almost anything you need from the wide range of stores in the town, from grocery stores to sporting goods, clothing and and bottle stores.
