You may be surprised to learn that in spite of the website being called “Durban Safaris and Tours“, I also offer a few Richards Bay safari tours!
Richards Bay features on most itineraries of cruise ships plying their trade in the southern waters and so I have put together some tours that offer fantastic safari tours from Richards Bay.
Richards Bay Safari Day Tours Options
Below you’ll see the Richards Bay safaris day tour options I have. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is the most popular safari tour for visitors to Richards Bay since it’s only 90 minutes away (give or take). The St Lucia estuary tour is also a short distance away (roughly 90 minutes) and there is also the Elephant Experience.
Tours Offered:
1. Hluhluwe Imfolozi Day Tour from Richards Bay
- 2 pax: R2,750.00 pp (closed vehicle)
- 4 pax or more: R2,750.00 pp (open vehicle)
You’ll be collected from you cruise ship as soon as you can get off – itineraries of course are different for the various cruise ships so we’ll happily adapt to your cruise itinerary.
You’ll be collected dockside and head north to “Memorial Gate” of the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. On the way your guide (very likely me) will give you info on the history of the area of Zulu and Richards Bay and delve into the traditions and culture of the Zulu people.
Provided there is 4 or more people booked on your safari day tour, you’ll then be treated to a full day tour in our open vehicle that is placed permanently at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. I include a light picnic lunch with lots of different options.
Once done I’ll have you dropped off at the ship on time, guaranteed!
2. St Lucia Estuary Cruise
- 2 pax: R2,400.00 pp
- 4 pax – 8pax: R2,150.00 pp
- 9 pax or more: R1,850.00 pp
The iSimangaliso Wetlands Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best places in South Africa to spot hippo and crocodile in their natural habitat. On this 2 hour cruise on the estuary of St Lucia, a town inside the iSimangaliso park, you’ll also get to spot amazing bird life, with some 600 species being recorded!
Apart from the cruise, you will also get a tour of the nearby crocodile park where you will learn so much more about these prehistoric reptiles.
The town of St Lucia is well known thanks to the resident hippo who stroll through the town at night enjoying the fruits of resident gardeners. Here you’ll get to enjoy a delicious lunch and then after walk the boardwalk through to the beach.
This is slower paced tour that allows you to just take a deep breath and relax!
3. Elephant Experience and 3 Hour Game Drive
- 2 pax – 6 pax: R3,200.00 pp
- 7 or more people: R2700.00 pp
This is another of popular tours I offer but number are limited and booking in advance is a must.
Much like the other tours, pick up is from the ship and as soon as possible we’ll head on up to Bayete Zulu, about 2 hours north of Richards Bay. En route your guide will give you background into the history of Zululand and of course chat about the traditions and culture of the Zulu people.
On arrival you’ll experience an amazing experience of seeing African elephant as close up as anyone is ever likely to see without the threat of being stomped on!
Next up we head to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game reserve for a 3 hour game drive before returning back to your cruise ship in Richards Bay.
