About the Comrades Marathon
First run in 1921, the Comrades Marathon was established to honour South African soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. Today, it is the largest and oldest ultramarathon in the world and remains one of the most prestigious races an endurance athlete can complete.
Every year, thousands of participants travel to KwaZulu-Natal to take part in the race, while family members, supporters, and tourists visit the region to experience the excitement and celebrate the achievements of the runners.
The Route
The route alternates annually between:
Up Run
The Up Run starts in Durban and finishes in Pietermaritzburg. This direction is generally considered the more demanding route due to the significant elevation gain throughout the race.
Down Run
The Down Run starts in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Durban. While runners enjoy more downhill sections, the race remains extremely challenging due to the distance and strain placed on the body.
Both routes pass through some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most scenic landscapes, including the Valley of a Thousand Hills, offering spectacular views and enthusiastic local support.
