How Safe is Durban? The Cruise Ship Edition

For the last few years, I have heard over and over again from international tourists about how surprised they are by the city of Durban. It seems that Durban has a reputation for being very dangerous, particularly for cruise ship passengers. So, how safe is Durban you may be asking; as safe as anywhere else is how I would answer.

It’s unfortunate that Durban has garnered such a reputation for being so dangerous, especially since, in my 14 years of guiding visitors through this incredible city, I’ve consistently experienced a safe and enjoyable environment with warm and friendly people and have not, nor have my guests, been a victim of crime in Durban.

Addressing the Myths

  • “Durban is too dangerous to explore”: This is a gross oversimplification. Like any major city, Durban has its challenges, but crime rates are not as extreme as some may suggest, and for the most part are concentrated on areas outside the city. By exercising common sense and adhering to basic safety precautions, visitors can explore the city with confidence.
  • “Don’t use independent guides”: This advice is misguided and often stems from a lack of understanding. Independent guides like myself offer a personalised and in-depth experience, often surpassing the limited scope of ship-organised tours. We are passionate about showcasing the true essence of Durban, going beyond the typical tourist traps.

Safety Tips for Cruise Ship Passengers to Durban

  • Stay informed: Research local conditions and be aware of any potential risks. Durban is growing, it’s going to have areas that tourists would be cautioned from visiting; but this is true of any city. One of the best resources is the Durban sub-reddit.
  • Travel in groups: Whenever possible, explore in the company of others – this is just common sense for tourists – not because it’s dangerous, but you could easily get lost.
  • Avoid walking alone at night: Stick to well-lit areas and use reputable transportation. Uber and Bolt work well in South Africa, and metered-cabs are reliable. Let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back.
  • Use reputable tour guides: Choose experienced and licensed guides with a proven track record – all guides in South Africa must be licensed.
  • Be mindful of your belongings: Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings.

Durban’s Charms

Despite the negative perceptions, Durban offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, stunning beaches, and a vibrant culinary scene.

  • Explore the vibrant markets: Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and aromas of the bustling Indian and Zulu markets. Learn about the role of nature in Zulu medicine and spirituality.
  • Relax on the golden beaches: Soak up the sun and enjoy the warm Indian Ocean waters. Learn to surf, or enjoy a SUP session, go snorkeling or even toast sundown on a yacht.
  • Discover the city’s rich history: Visit historical landmarks and learn about Durban’s fascinating past. Discover for yourself why, in spite of South Africa’s difficult past, the people remain upbeat and cheerful!
  • Indulge in delicious cuisine: Sample local delicacies and savour the flavours of Durban’s diverse culinary landscape. From delicious curry’s to Michelin starred restaurants, there is an experience for everyone.

How Safe is Durban: My Experience

In my 14 years of guiding visitors through Durban, I have not encountered any significant safety issues – and I have walked the streets from one side of the city to the other.

My guests consistently express their enjoyment and feel safe throughout their explorations. By choosing reputable guides and exercising common sense, cruise ship passengers can confidently explore Durban and experience its unique charm.

In South Africa, guides must be legally registered with the Department of Tourism, they should have a badge and an identity card – if driving they should have insurance, a professional driving permit and the vehicle must be certified to carry passengers. To make the most out of your time in Durban, book a qualified guide!

Don’t let fear dictate your travel plans.

With a bit of preparation and a focus on responsible travel, you can safely and confidently explore the vibrant city of Durban.

I hope this blog post helps to counter the negative perceptions about Durban’s safety and encourages cruise ship passengers to explore this amazing city!
