If you are visiting Richards Bay on a cruise ship, you might be surprised at just how many wildlife experiences are within reach of the port.
KwaZulu-Natal is home to some wonderful game reserves, beautiful wetlands and some of the best opportunities to experience wild Africa.
I offer several safaris from Richards Bay, giving you the opportunity to explore the African bush, look for the Big Five or take a boat cruise to see hippos and crocodiles. Whether you have always dreamed of seeing an elephant in the wild or simply want to experience something different during your time ashore, there are several options to consider.
I operate Durban Safaris and Tours, and I have put together a selection of excursions for visitors arriving in Richards Bay. These include trips to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Thula Thula Private Game Reserve, Manyoni Private Game Reserve and St Lucia.
Each offers a different experience, so let me explain what you can expect and help you decide which safari might be right for you.
Which safari from Richards Bay is right for you?
When people think of an African safari, they usually picture elephants, lions, rhinos and giraffes roaming through the bush. And while a traditional game drive is certainly a wonderful experience, there is more than one way to discover the wildlife of KwaZulu-Natal.

Here are the five excursions I offer from Richards Bay.
1. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve: A classic African safari
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is one of South Africa’s best-known game reserves and a popular choice for visitors wanting to experience an African safari.
The reserve is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. You will also find giraffes, zebras, antelope and many other species.
Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is recognised as Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserve. It also played an important role in saving the southern white rhino from extinction.
For me, one of the attractions of visiting this reserve is the opportunity to explore its beautiful Zululand landscape while looking for wildlife. No two game drives are the same. You might come across a herd of elephants, spot rhinos grazing or spend time searching for one of the more elusive predators.
Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but that is part of the adventure.
If you have always wanted to experience a traditional African game drive, this is an excellent option to consider.
As added incentive, I offer a traditional South African braai in the park at R120 per head.
2. Thula Thula Private Game Reserve: Experience the African bush
If you would prefer to visit a private game reserve, Thula Thula is another option available from Richards Bay.
Situated in KwaZulu-Natal, Thula Thula has a distinctive place in the region’s conservation history and is known for its elephant conservation work thank to the books written by Lawrence Anthony and Françoise Malby-Anthony.

A visit offers an opportunity to experience the African bush in a private-reserve setting and discover more about the wildlife that inhabits this part of South Africa.
When choosing between different safari destinations, I always recommend considering the experience you want rather than simply looking at the names of the animals you might see. Each reserve has its own character, and the best choice depends on your interests and the arrangements available for your visit.
If Thula Thula appeals to you, get in touch and I can provide more information about the excursion.
3. Manyoni Private Game Reserve: Another wildlife experience
Manyoni Private Game Reserve is another destination worth considering if you are looking for safaris from Richards Bay.
Located in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Manyoni is a conservation area offering a private game reserve experience. It provides another opportunity to explore the region’s wildlife and landscapes away from the coast.
If you are comparing safari options, it is worth looking at the different destinations available before deciding which one best suits your interests.

As with any safari, the animals you encounter will depend on the day and their movements within the reserve.
I can help you explore the available arrangements for a visit to Manyoni and determine whether it is a suitable option for your time in Richards Bay.
4. St Lucia: Hippos, crocodiles and a boat cruise
Not everyone wants to spend their day travelling through a game reserve in search of the Big Five. If you enjoy being on the water and would like to see some of South Africa’s aquatic wildlife, St Lucia offers a very different experience.
The St Lucia estuary forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its remarkable natural diversity.
One of the main attractions is a boat cruise on the estuary, where you have the opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles and a variety of birdlife.

Hippos can often be seen resting in the water, while crocodiles may be spotted along the banks. The surrounding wetlands are also home to numerous bird species.
For visitors who enjoy nature and photography, St Lucia is well worth considering. It is a different experience from a traditional safari, but it gives you another opportunity to discover the natural beauty of KwaZulu-Natal.
If you would like to see hippos and crocodiles rather than concentrate on a Big Five game drive, this could be the excursion for you.
Visit the St Lucia tour page for more information.
5. Elephant Experience and Game Drive: Get Closer to African Wildlife
If you would like to experience elephants during your visit to Richards Bay, an elephant experience combined with a game drive is another option to consider.
There is something quite special about seeing elephants up close and having the opportunity to learn more about these remarkable animals. Their size, intelligence and social behaviour make them fascinating to observe, whether you are visiting Africa for the first time or have been on safari before.
Combining an elephant experience with a game drive gives you the opportunity to enjoy two aspects of a wildlife excursion. You can learn more about elephants before heading out to explore the surrounding reserve and look for other animals.
For many visitors, elephants are one of the highlights of an African holiday, so this could be a memorable addition to your time in KwaZulu-Natal.
As with my other excursions from Richards Bay, the important consideration for cruise ship passengers is the time available. We need to allow for the journey, the elephant experience, the game drive and the return to port.
Safaris from Richards Bay for cruise ship passengers
If you are arriving in Richards Bay aboard a cruise ship, there is one important consideration when choosing your excursion: the time you have available.
Unlike visitors staying in the area for several days, cruise passengers have a fixed arrival and departure schedule. We need to consider the time required to leave the port, travel to your chosen destination, enjoy the excursion and return.
The journey times and duration of the activities vary between the four destinations. This means that the best excursion for you will depend partly on how long your ship is in port.
When you contact me, please provide your ship’s name, the date you arrive, your scheduled departure time and the number of people in your group. I can then discuss the available options with you.
I recommend making arrangements before your cruise rather than waiting until you arrive in Richards Bay. This gives us time to discuss your preferences and work out which excursion may be suitable.
I want you to enjoy your time in KwaZulu-Natal without having to worry unnecessarily about the practical arrangements.
What should you expect on a safari?
If this is your first visit to Africa, you might be wondering what a safari actually involves.
On a traditional game drive, you travel through a reserve looking for wildlife. Your guide helps you spot animals and explains something about their behaviour and the environment in which they live.
Some days you might see elephants close to the road, while on others you may spend time looking for animals in the distance. The landscape, the birdlife and the smaller details are all part of the experience.
A visit to St Lucia is different because the main wildlife experience is on the water. Instead of travelling through a game reserve, you have the opportunity to observe hippos, crocodiles and birds from a boat.
Both experiences offer something special, and the choice really comes down to what you would most like to see and do.
I always suggest that visitors think about their interests first. If you have your heart set on seeing elephants and rhinos, a game reserve is the obvious choice. If hippos, crocodiles and birdlife appeal to you, St Lucia may be a better fit.
Why book your Richards Bay safari with a local tour operator?
When visiting a destination for the first time, it helps to have someone who knows the area and can explain the options available.
I operate Durban Safaris and Tours, offering visitors the opportunity to explore KwaZulu-Natal’s wildlife, landscapes and cultural attractions.
My aim is to help you make the most of your visit by matching you with an excursion that suits your interests and available time.
Whether you are interested in a Big Five safari, a private game reserve or a boat cruise at St Lucia, I can help you explore the options and provide information to assist with your decision.
If you are travelling on a cruise ship, I will also need to consider your port schedule when discussing the arrangements. The time required for each excursion is an important part of deciding what is practical for your visit.
