Club Med South Africa offers beautiful beaches, fantastic dining and plenty of activities, but KwaZulu-Natal has so much more waiting just beyond the resort.
Within a comfortable day’s drive you can experience Africa’s iconic wildlife, meet elephants up close, cruise through a UNESCO World Heritage Site and discover some of South Africa’s most spectacular game reserves.
If you’re looking to make the most of your holiday, these are my best day trips from Club Med.

1. Bayete Zulu Elephant Experience – A Truly Special Wildlife Encounter
If you’ve always dreamed of getting close to an African elephant, this is one experience I can wholeheartedly recommend.
I’ve visited Bayete Zulu many times over the years, and every visit reminds me just how remarkable these gentle giants really are. This isn’t simply about seeing elephants from a distance, it’s an opportunity to spend time with them, learn about their personalities and behaviour, and appreciate just how intelligent they are.

You’ll get to hear the elephants stories for the rangers that look after them and you’ll have the opportunity to feed the elephants, touch them and take plenty of photographs, creating memories that will stay with you long after your South African holiday has ended.
One of the things I enjoy most about this excursion is that it feels relaxed and personal. There are no crowds or rushed schedules, just time to enjoy being in the company of these magnificent animals while learning more about elephant conservation in South Africa.
To round off the day, I combine the elephant experience with an afternoon game drive in a nearby Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve. It’s the perfect combination – a close-up encounter with one of Africa’s most iconic animals, followed by the excitement of heading into the bush in search of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and, if we’re lucky, even rhino or buffalo.
If you’re staying at Club Med and would like to experience something beyond the resort, I think this is one of the most memorable day trips you can choose. It offers a wonderful balance of wildlife, conservation and authentic South African hospitality, all within an easy day’s excursion from the resort.

2. Hluhluwe safari with a traditional South African braai
If there’s one day trip I always enjoy guiding, it’s a safari to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. Every day in the bush is different, and after all these years I still get excited every time I drive through the gates.
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa and one of the best places in South Africa to see the Big Five. It’s also famous for its incredible conservation success, having helped save the white rhino from extinction.

We’ll set off early from Club Med, giving us plenty of time to explore the reserve while the animals are at their most active. There’s always a sense of anticipation as we head into the bush. Will today be the day we find a pride of lions? Will an elephant wander across the road in front of us? Every safari is different, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
One of my favourite parts of the day is stopping for a traditional South African braai. Rather than grabbing a quick meal at a restaurant, we’ll enjoy a relaxed barbecue in the African bush. While I prepare the fire and cook the food, you can stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery and simply soak up the atmosphere. There’s something uniquely South African about sharing a braai surrounded by nature, and it’s often one of the highlights guests remember long after the safari is over.
After lunch, we’ll continue exploring the reserve, looking for rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and the many other animals that call Hluhluwe home. The reserve is also a paradise for bird lovers, with hundreds of species recorded throughout the park.
For many visitors, this is the safari they’ve always imagined—beautiful scenery, incredible wildlife and an authentic South African braai shared in the heart of the bush.

3. St Lucia Wetlands Experience
If you’d prefer a more relaxed day exploring one of South Africa’s most beautiful natural areas, then my St Lucia estuary tour is always a great choice.
The town of St Lucia sits on the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a fascinating place where lakes, estuaries, forests, beaches and wetlands all come together, creating an incredible haven for wildlife.

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the estuary cruise. It’s one of the best ways to experience this unique environment, and every cruise is a little different.
We usually see large pods of hippos relaxing in the water, enormous Nile crocodiles basking along the banks, and an amazing variety of birdlife. Keep an eye out for African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and, if we’re lucky, even a fish eagle swooping down to catch its lunch.
After the cruise, we’ll visit the local crocodile centre, where you’ll learn more about one of Africa’s most misunderstood predators. It’s a great opportunity to see crocodiles of all sizes up close, along with snakes and other reptiles found throughout the region.
Before heading home, we’ll take a leisurely walk along part of the St Lucia boardwalk. Winding through coastal forest and overlooking the estuary, it’s the perfect place to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the area. There’s always the chance of spotting monkeys, bushbuck, colourful birdlife or even a hippo grazing nearby if we’re fortunate.
What I enjoy most about this tour is the variety. It’s not about rushing from one attraction to the next. Instead, it’s a chance to experience one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most remarkable natural landscapes at a comfortable pace, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery, wildlife and relaxed atmosphere that make St Lucia such a special destination.

4. Cheetah Conservation Experience & Safari
For anyone interested in African wildlife and conservation, this is a fascinating day out.
Most people dream of seeing a cheetah sprinting across the African plains, but very few realise just how vulnerable these beautiful cats have become. This experience offers the chance to learn about the important conservation work being done to protect them, while also getting much closer to these incredible animals than you ever could in the wild.

During your visit, you’ll learn about the challenges cheetahs face, the role of breeding and rehabilitation programmes, and what is being done to ensure their future in South Africa. It’s an informative experience that gives you a much greater appreciation for one of Africa’s most iconic predators.
Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities for photographs. Seeing a cheetah up close really allows you to appreciate its incredible build, distinctive markings and the adaptations that make it the fastest land animal on Earth.
To complete the day, we’ll head out on a guided game drive through a nearby private game reserve. This gives us the chance to enjoy the African bush while looking for giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and many of the other animals that make KwaZulu-Natal such a rewarding safari destination.
Every game drive is different, which is part of the excitement, you never quite know what might be waiting around the next corner.
I enjoy this tour because it combines education with adventure. You leave with a better understanding of South Africa’s conservation efforts while still enjoying the thrill of exploring the bush and encountering wildlife in its natural environment.
Why Book With a Local Guide?
There are plenty of ways to book tours online these days, but I believe travelling with a local guide makes all the difference.
I’ve spent many years exploring KwaZulu-Natal and sharing it with visitors from around the world. It’s not just about getting from one destination to the next—it’s about understanding the places we visit, spotting wildlife that others might miss, and sharing the stories that bring South Africa to life.
When you book with me, you’re not joining a large coach tour with a strict timetable. My tours are personal, relaxed and designed to give you the best possible experience. If we come across elephants beside the road, we’ll stop and enjoy the moment. If there’s an incredible viewpoint or a great photographic opportunity, we’ll make time for it.
I also believe that a good tour should never feel rushed. Whether we’re watching hippos on the St Lucia estuary, enjoying a traditional braai in the African bush or spending time with rescued elephants at Bayete Zulu, I want you to leave feeling that you’ve experienced the real KwaZulu-Natal, not just ticked another attraction off a list.
I’ll collect you directly from Club Med and return you at the end of the day, so everything is taken care of from start to finish. All you need to do is relax, enjoy the scenery and make the most of your South African holiday.
For me, every tour is an opportunity to share a place I’m proud to call home. I hope that by the end of the day, you’ll leave with not only some wonderful photographs, but also a genuine appreciation for the wildlife, landscapes and people that make this part of South Africa so special.
FAQ
Most of the destinations are within a comfortable day’s drive from Club Med. I’ll collect you from the resort in the morning and have you back in the evening, allowing you to enjoy a full day exploring some of KwaZulu-Natal’s best wildlife experiences.
Yes. I offer convenient pick-up and drop-off directly at Club Med, so there’s no need to arrange your own transport.
Yes and no. Usually the tours are private simply because I have a number of vehicles and can ensure each booking gets their own vehicle. On the game drives, you may have others on the same game drive, this is usual though.
All of these tours are suitable for families, although younger children often enjoy the Bayete Zulu Elephant Experience because of the opportunity to interact with the elephants. The St Lucia tour is another excellent option, with its boat cruise and chance to see hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat.
Wild animals are exactly that, wild. While I can’t guarantee sightings of every species, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s premier safari destinations and offers excellent opportunities to see rhino, elephant, buffalo and many other animals. Every safari is unique, and that’s part of the excitement.
I recommend comfortable clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a camera. A pair of binoculars is always useful if you have one. During the cooler winter months, it’s also worth bringing a light jacket for the early morning drive
Each tour includes return transport from Club Med, guiding throughout the day and entry to the attractions included in your chosen excursion. The Hluhluwe Safari also includes a traditional South African braai enjoyed in the bush. I’ll provide full details when you book.
I would certainly recommend it, especially during school holidays and the busy tourist season. My tours are private and availability is limited, so booking in advance is the best way to secure your preferred date.
Absolutely. If you have a particular interest in wildlife, birding, photography or simply want to spend more time at a specific location, I’m always happy to discuss a customised itinerary where practical.
Simply get in touch using the contact form on the website or send me a WhatsApp message. I’ll answer any questions you may have, check availability and help you choose the excursion that’s best suited to your holiday
