If you have ever day-dreamed about watching herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the African plains, or of lion prides holding court atop the rocky terrain, or of the joy in your families faces as a giraffe or elephant strolls by, then one of our Durban safari packages are just what you need.
Durban is one of the best places in South Africa to dip your toes into the safari experience and in this blog post I’ll cover the Durban safari packages that I offer and help you make the most of your safari adventure to South Africa.
Why Choose Durban for Your Safari?
First and foremost, Durban offers convenience! After landing at King Shaka International Airport, you are only 3 hours away from Zululand, home the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve or iSimangaliso, Bayete Zulu or Thula Thula or one of the many other game reserves in the area.
Apart from my Durban safari packages, you are also a stones throw away from the beautiful beaches of Durban, or the glorious Drakensberg Mountains or even the battlefields of Rorkes Drift, iSandlwana and Spionkop.
The city of Durban itself is a vibrant African city with amazing beaches with all the modern amenities that any traveller could hope for.
Types of Safari Packages Available
It doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned traveller embarking on your first safari trip, or a gap-year student planning the ultimate adventure for the group, I will have a safari package that will fit your itinerary and budget.
1. Full Day Safaris
Not everyone has the time to enjoy a mulit-day safari tour and so I have a few great options for you to book a full day safari tour from Durban. You may not be as lucky in sightings as someone on a multi-day safari tour, but you will definitely enough of the amazing African wildlife to keep you coming back again and again.
Option 1: Hluhluwe Imfolozi Full Day Safari Tour
Just 3 hours north of Durban lies the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. Home to the big-5 and a plethora of other game, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve remains one of the most popular game reserves to visit in South Africa.
Option 2: St Lucia Estuary and Game Drive
North of Durban is the famed UNESCO site, iSimangaliso. It’s at this amazing site where you’ll get to enjoy a 2 hour cruise on the St Lucia estuary viewing hippo, crocodile and more birds species that you can name! And right next door is the Eastern Shores reserve where you can enjoy a relaxed game drive through.
Option 3: Elephant Experience and Game Drive
The game reserve of Bayete Zulu is home to two extraordinary elephants, survivors of a culling operation in the Kruger National Park. Lucky for us humans, the two elephants, Rambo and Rachel, make their way to the Boma to enjoy some treats they know will be waiting for them. And it’s here that you’ll get to learn more about and interact with these gentle giants. And after your time spent with the elephant, you can enjoy a game drive through the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Reserve.
Option 4: Tala Game Reserve and PheZulu
Just an hour west of Durban lies the lovely Tala Game Reserve. While the big-5 may not be strolling about the place like at Hluhluwe or Nambiti or Thula Thula, fact it is still offers up some amazing wildlife viewing options as well is a perfect place to spot birds if you’re trying to complete your life-list.
2. Multi-Day Safari Packages from Durban
For a deeper dive into the amazing wildlife that a Durban safari tour reveals, you can’t go wrong with a multi-day safari tour package from Durban.
I have a number of options from overnight trips to 4 day trips and even longer if you would prefer. On top of that I can offer tours that fit all tastes, from budget friendly options to more luxurious 4 and 5 star lodges – you only need to ask and I’ll happily plan an amazing sfari tour for you.

5. Bush and Battlefields Safari Packages
Another popular option is our “bush and battlefields tour”. You have the option of my standard 6 day trip or you can alter the tour to suit your itinerary and budget.
On the battlefield safari package you’ll get to visit iSandlwana, Rorkes Drift, Fugitives Drift on the battlefields leg and then head to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve for a few days to unwind.
It’s an amazing tour that is so popular with those with an interest in the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. Again, just contact me for more information about this tour.
Some Tips When Booking A Durban Safari Package
- Timeframe: How long do you want to spend on safari? If you’re pressed for time, a day trip is ideal, but for a deeper experience, multi-day tours are the way to go.
- Budget: Safari packages vary in cost, depending on the length of the tour, accommodation level, and whether you opt for private or group tours.
- Wildlife Focus: Depending on what wildlife you want to see, some reserves are better suited to specific animals. For example, Hluhluwe Imfolozi is renowned for its conservation of white rhinos, while the Bayete Zulu Elephant Experience provides an up-close encounter with Africa’s gentle giants.
- Seasonality: Wildlife viewing can vary depending on the time of year. In winter (May to September), game viewing is often better as animals congregate near water sources, while summer (October to April) offers lush landscapes and abundant birdlife.
